Former world number one Mats Wilander has provided an analysis distinguishing between the ‘best’ and the ‘greatest’ tennis players in history.

Following Roger Federer’s induction into the Hall of Fame, Wilander identified Federer as the ‘greatest’ due to his role as a premier ambassador and his profound impact on the sport through his conduct and creativity. However, Wilander asserted that Novak Djokovic is the ‘best’ player to ever play the game in terms of technical supremacy and skill.

Wilander noted that Federer was exceptionally dominant within his own generation, often competing against younger players like Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as they emerged. He highlighted Federer’s mental toughness and tactical variety while noting the age gaps between the era's top competitors.
