San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday to address a sports hernia and a core-muscle tear. The 33-year-old has been sidelined since June 30 due to the abdominal strain and hernia. 

Chapman traveled to Philadelphia to be treated by specialist Dr. William C. Meyers. The injury concludes a season in which Chapman recorded seven home runs before his absence. His contract with the Giants runs through 2030.

Following the procedure, manager Tony Vitello reported that the surgery went well. The procedure was required to repair a core muscle that had “torn off the bone in two places.” 

While initial estimates suggested a recovery period of eight to ten weeks, updated reports indicate Chapman is expected to recover within four to six months. He is projected to return for spring training, though his absence continues to impact the team’s postseason aspirations.

The loss of Chapman has significantly depleted the Giants’ infield, particularly when combined with the absences of Willy Adames and Casey Schmitt. As the team struggles with a 55-79 record, manager Tony Vitello is expected to use the remainder of the season to evaluate young players such as Bryce Eldridge and Drew Gilbert.
