The Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) in Mauritius has initiated an internal investigation following allegations that confidential documents were leaked to a suspect. The probe began after official FCC documents were found on the mobile device of Steven Moothoocurpen, an individual arrested in connection with a suspected Rs 75.9 million drug trafficking and money laundering case. Moothoocurpen is currently facing charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

The recovered data includes intelligence-gathering details, information on ongoing investigations, and files regarding former suspects. A comparative analysis has revealed that one document, a request for a Chamber Judge order, was fabricated. Investigators are now working to determine whether Moothoocurpen created the forgery or if an FCC official provided it.

In addition to investigative files, the leak included photographs of the homes of several FCC investigators and the Director General, Sanjay Dawoodarry. Following the discovery, Dawoodarry reported receiving a threatening letter accompanied by bullets at his residence, an incident that occurred shortly after Moothoocurpen was observed near his home.

As part of the inquiry, investigators have seized laptops and phones used by FCC staff for forensic examination. The FCC stated it is taking the suspicions ‘very seriously’ and maintains that no violations undermining its integrity will be tolerated.
