Construction of a new Danube bridge in Mauthausen is scheduled to commence in autumn 2028. The project has faced decades of delays stemming from political disagreements between states, legal disputes, and environmental procedures.

Due to these timeline shifts, the existing bridge, which has been in operation since 1961, requires extensive renovations. This will necessitate a complete closure of the current Danube crossing for three months during the summer of 2028, causing significant detours for commuters. 

Project costs have increased significantly from an initial 2018 estimate of 125 million euros to current estimates of approximately 230 million euros.
