Archaeologists using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology have identified significant evidence of ancient Maya civilization and land management. In Belize, research from the Bladen Legacy project indicates that ancient agricultural canals and limestone leaching from structures have influenced modern forest ecology, resulting in taller and more diverse tree populations in specific areas.

In a related discovery, researchers identified the lost Maya city of Valeriana. By using LiDAR to digitally remove dense vegetation, the team uncovered more than 6,500 pre-Hispanic structures, including pyramids, amphitheaters, and sports fields.
