Medical researchers have identified potential new pathways for treating alpha-gal syndrome and sea nettle jellyfish venom toxicity.

In studies supported by the National Institutes of Health, researchers isolated 42 antibodies from malaria-exposed individuals that may hinder allergic reactions associated with alpha-gal syndrome. 

Concurrently, research led by Christopher Denes of the University of Sydney, published in ‘Science Advances’, utilized CRISPR genome screening to analyze the venom of the sea nettle jellyfish (Chrysaora quinquecirrha). The study found that the venom affects various human systems, including the heart, nervous system, and kidneys. Findings indicate that the anticoagulant heparin can block the venom’s cytotoxic effects and reduce pain and sensitivity, as demonstrated in mice. This offers a potential molecular-based alternative to current treatments like water and sodium bicarbonate suspensions.
