Medical research is increasingly focused on the long-term developmental and clinical impacts of prenatal opioid exposure on infants.

In Australia, researchers are investigating potential treatments, such as gut supplements, to mitigate developmental issues like anxiety, learning difficulties, and impulse control problems in babies exposed to methadone and other opioids in the womb.

In the United States, the OPTImize NOW study compared different management strategies for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). The study found that infants receiving symptom-based dosing reached medical readiness for discharge faster, averaging 9.18 days, compared to 11.61 days for those on a scheduled taper.

Additionally, research in South Korea utilizing national health insurance records found that children exposed to two or more opioid prescriptions during pregnancy had an 8% higher rate of hospital admissions compared to their unexposed siblings. Researchers noted that the gap in risk was smaller when comparing siblings than when comparing exposed children to unrelated peers, suggesting that shared family factors and genetics play a significant role in these outcomes.
