Various international conferences are being held in Italy to address Mediterranean cultural and demographic themes. In Cerisano, the third International Ethnomusicology Conference focuses on Mediterranean sound traditions, exploring the musical connections between Calabria, the Balkans, and the Caucasus through research in vocal and instrumental traditions.

In Cisternino, the 10th ‘I Borghi più belli del Mediterraneo’ conference, organized by the association ‘I Borghi più belli d’Italia’ and the Municipality of Cisternino, addresses the future of small villages. Held from October 23 to 25, 2026, the event brought together experts and delegations from Croatia, Lebanon, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Slovenia to discuss territorial regeneration and strategies to combat depopulation.

Discussions centered on making small centers more attractive and livable through sustainable development, innovation, and the valorization of local resources. Participants explored concepts such as ‘restanza’ (the choice to stay), ‘tornanza’ (returning to ancestral homes), and digital nomadism. Experts emphasized the necessity of essential services—including mobility, healthcare, and cultural growth—and the integration of agriculture, tourism, and gastronomy to ensure long-term viability.
