In late August 2026, the German NGO vessel MV Louise Michel rescued 42 migrants, primarily from Somalia, in the central Mediterranean. The rescue occurred between Libyan and Maltese waters following an alert from Alarm Phone regarding a dinghy in distress.

During the operation, the MV Louise Michel reported a confrontation with a Libyan patrol boat. Reports indicate the Libyan vessel approached in international waters and “discharged shots toward the NGO ship” while the crew attempted to save two individuals who had fallen into the water. Libyan authorities subsequently rescued those two individuals. The rescued group, which included 14 women and one pregnant person, was transported to the port of Crotone, Italy, after an additional two-day journey.
