In late September 2026, the Sea-Watch rescue vessel Aurora responded to a shipwreck in the central Mediterranean, specifically in the waters between Libyan and Tunisian rescue zones. The incident involved a nearly deflated rubber dinghy, with some survivors reaching the Hasdrubal offshore platform by swimming and climbing. Initial reports indicated 28 survivors from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Pakistan were rescued and assigned to disembark at Lampedusa, Italy. While early accounts noted two confirmed deaths and six missing persons, subsequent reports updated the death toll to eight, including three children from a single family. Sea-Watch has raised allegations regarding the response time and oversight of the incident. The organization claims authorities were notified of the distress signal 12 hours prior to the rescue and alleged that a Frontex surveillance aircraft, identified as Eagle6, flew over the area without intervening. Sea-Watch stated that if these claims are confirmed, it would constitute a “new case of complicity in a shipwreck.” ## Timeline ### 2026-10-01: Sea-Watch vessel rescues 28 migrants after fatal Mediterranean shipwreck Eight people, including three children, died in a Mediterranean shipwreck off Tunisia.
