In early June 2026 the National People’s Party’s national committee in Shillong adopted resolutions calling for stronger democratic participation, a reinforced Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime and protection against uranium mining. The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) followed up the next month with a 20‑point charter presented to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, demanding immediate ILP enforcement and the activation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), warning it would take its own enforcement measures if the state delayed.

On 18 July 2026 KSU activists, led by organising secretary Cleenstar Shabong, sealed a mosque on 4th Furlong in Shillong, alleging the structure lacked the required approvals and land documents. The action was timed to the 191st death anniversary of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem and was accompanied by renewed calls for a stringent anti‑influx law, stressing that unchecked outsider entry could marginalise the Khasi community.

A week later KSU intensified its campaign, organising a series of public meetings across Meghalaya to press for the swift implementation of the MRSSA of 2016. General secretary Reuben Najiar highlighted an RTI‑revealed lack of knowledge within the Ministry of Home Affairs, the High Court’s inaction on related cases, and the stalled 2019 amendment awaiting presidential assent. The union also criticised the conversion of the Umling Facilitation Centre into a food court and linked recent population influx to displacement drives in neighbouring Assam and West Bengal, reiterating that an effective ILP is the only viable tool to protect indigenous identity and rights.
