The Mekedatu dam project on the Cauvery River remains a significant point of contention between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Karnataka government is actively seeking approvals from the Central Water Commission to address the drinking water needs of Bengaluru, arguing the reservoir is essential for managing seasonal resources for its growing population.

Opposition to the project persists, with Tamil Nadu expressing concerns over environmental impacts and reduced water flow. Additionally, former Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has called on the central government to block the project, warning that construction would “completely stop the flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,” which would severely impact farmers in the Cauvery Delta and Puducherry.

In an effort to move the project forward, Karnataka Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy has ordered officials to accelerate the process and lay the project’s foundation as soon as possible. A key priority in this acceleration is the identification of alternative land to compensate for approximately 5,096 hectares of forest land expected to be submerged. 

The minister has instructed officials to prioritize identifying deemed forest land or land belonging to the Revenue Department, explicitly stating that “residential areas should not be included in these reports.” Officials are currently evaluating potential land in Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Bengaluru South districts, including whether the nearly 30,000 hectares of deemed forest land in Mandya district can meet the entire requirement.
