Reports indicate that artificial intelligence could unlock over $1 trillion in economic and sustainability value across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by 2030. The World Economic Forum suggests the region has the investment capacity and ambition to become a major AI hub, potentially offering a competitive advantage through faster data center grid connections compared to mature markets.

However, the World Economic Forum has warned that these ambitions face significant risks from rising electricity demand, water scarcity, and extreme heat. To meet AI infrastructure needs, the region’s electricity capacity may need to increase by 40 per cent by 2030, while current projections suggest only 15 per cent growth.

Challenges include the high power consumption of AI server racks and the fact that cooling accounts for over 40 per cent of electricity use at regional data centers. Recommendations to mitigate these risks include classifying AI data centers as ‘critical dynamic loads’ and requiring detailed electricity-demand forecasts for large-scale projects.

## Claims

- US data-center developers could face a 32-gigawatt power shortfall through 2028. (corroborated by 3 sources)
- Data centers are projected to use 3% of the earth’s electricity by 2030. (single source)
- At least 47 major AI infrastructure projects were delayed or cancelled in 2026. (single source)
- Microsoft withdrew from a deal with Nscale in Essex due to power grid connection delays. (single source)
- In the UK, 315 data centers were waiting for grid connection as of July 2026. (single source)
- AI rack power draw is roughly twenty times higher than normal server racks. (single source)

## Timeline

### 2026-10-15: AI infrastructure expansion faces critical power and grid constraints

AI expansion is driving massive electricity demand, with US developers facing a projected 32 GW power shortfall by 2028. Infrastructure constraints are already causing project delays and cancellations.

### 2026-10-14: MENA AI growth could unlock $1 trillion by 2030

AI could unlock $1 trillion in value for the MENA region by 2030, provided the area can scale energy, water, and data center infrastructure to support rapid growth.
