The arrival of Mennonite families in Suriname’s Tibiti region has sparked political debate regarding land use, legal compliance, and potential human trafficking. NDP parliamentary group leader Rabin Parmessar called for an investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, alleging that families may have been brought to the country under false pretenses. Parmessar noted that some families, including one from Belize, reportedly arrived with different expectations regarding land ownership and rights, and expressed concern over forest clearing and the potential for a larger influx of foreign settlers. In response, ABOP Member of Parliament Edgar Sampie expressed support for the Mennonites’ presence, suggesting they could aid interior development provided they follow local laws. Sampie cautioned that the political discourse might be used by certain parties to distract from other national issues. He emphasized that the government must implement frameworks that balance economic development with environmental protection and the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to protect local communities. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-25: Edgar Sampie supports Mennonite arrival in Suriname Suriname MP Edgar Sampie supports the arrival of Mennonites for economic development but warns that political parties may be using the issue to distract from other significant national matters. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/edgar-sampie-supports-mennonite-arrival-in-suriname ### 2026-09-17: Suriname politician calls for investigation into Mennonite settlement Suriname's NDP leader Rabin Parmessar has called for a human trafficking investigation into Mennonite families arriving in the Tibiti region under allegedly misleading circumstances. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/suriname-politician-calls-for-investigation-into-mennonite-settlement --- Cite as: Mennonite settlement in Suriname.
