# Mental health support gaps for vulnerable English youth

Research from the University of Cambridge has identified significant gaps in mental health support for vulnerable children and young people in England. Analysis of NHS Digital data reveals that children in care or on child protection plans—who are two to three times more likely to face mental health difficulties due to abuse or neglect—are frequently underserved. Specifically, less than one in five of these vulnerable individuals had contact with mental health services in a given year.

While nearly 2 million children and young people were in contact with mental health services during the study period, fewer than half of those with a probable mental health disorder received a referral. Common reasons for referral included anxiety, crisis situations, depression, neurodevelopmental conditions, and self-harm. 

In response to these findings and rising mental distress, discussions have emerged regarding the risks of over-medicalizing normal developmental difficulties. While the government has implemented measures such as funding and school-based mental health workers, experts suggest a need for practical support, community connection, and listening services to complement clinical interventions.
