The reopening of the historic Mercado del Norte in San Miguel de Tucumán has faced delays due to economic challenges. Initially, the full reopening was postponed because local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could not afford rental rates ranging from 3 to 6 million pesos, leaving approximately 20% to 22% of commercial spaces vacant. Héctor Viñales, president of the Economic Federation of Tucumán, noted that these costs exceeded regional business structures, leading to the leasing of the largest interior area to a large Chinese bazaar.

The project, now referred to as the Paseo del Norte commercial and gastronomic complex, is currently targeting a November opening. Renovation works have moved into the stage of conditioning commercial spaces, and approximately 70% of the planned 80 to 100 premises have been leased. The modernized development aims to preserve the original structure while adding thermal and acoustic conditioning, featuring a gastronomic patio, a cultural center, and various retail sectors.
