Sources: 4. Developments: 2. Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has introduced Atenea, a proprietary artificial intelligence platform designed to assist its technological teams in software development. The tool is currently being utilized by more than 500 engineers to increase the speed, efficiency, and quality of software creation by integrating the company’s specific business knowledge, technical standards, and internal processes into the development cycle. CTO Sergio Pajares stated that the platform is intended to serve as a support for professionals rather than a replacement for technical decision-making, using specialized AI agents to execute specific tasks autonomously while allowing engineers to retain final authority. To facilitate adoption, the company has established a network of ‘early adopters’ across IT domains such as security, infrastructure, and operations to mentor other teams. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes using AI for tasks such as employee scheduling, invoice processing, and product data management. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Mercadona launches Atenea AI platform for software development Mercadona has introduced Atenea, a custom AI platform developed by its IT unit to accelerate software development and integrate company-specific technical standards for over 500 engineers. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mercadona-launches-atenea-ai-platform-for-software-development ### 2026-10-01: Mercadona introduces ATENEA AI platform for software development Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has launched ATENEA, an in-house AI platform used by 500 engineers to accelerate and improve the quality of software development. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mercadona-introduces-atenea-ai-platform-for-software-development --- Cite as: Mercadona implementation of Atenea AI platform.
