The Global Mercy, the world’s largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship, has docked at the Port of Tema to begin a 10-month medical mission in Ghana. This initiative, operated by the charity Mercy Ships, marks the organization’s fifth field service in the country and is expected to continue until June 2027.

In partnership with the Ghanaian government, the mission aims to provide free specialized surgical care and dental treatments. The project targets between 1,900 and 2,600 surgeries and between 1,600 and 2,145 dental treatments. Available procedures include cleft lip and palate repair, tumor removal, cataract surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, obstetric fistula repair, pediatric orthopedic surgery, and general surgery. To ensure the program reaches those in need, a nationwide registration and selection process will be implemented to identify eligible patients.

The mission addresses critical shortages in Ghana’s medical sector. According to the Ghana Health Service, the nation has approximately 200 physician-anesthesiologists and orthopedic surgeons, along with nearly 500 dental professionals. These shortages, combined with high costs and geographic barriers, often prevent patients from accessing necessary specialized care.

Beyond direct clinical care, the mission focuses on strengthening national healthcare infrastructure through medical education, mentoring, and clinical placements for approximately 100 to 250 local healthcare professionals. The ship features facilities for up to 199 patients, including acute care, ICU, and rehabilitation centers. Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, noted that the collaboration aligns with the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan launched in 2024, supporting national priorities through a partnership spanning over three decades.
