In Mexico, academic institutions and government agencies are implementing measures to prevent and contain the cattle screw worm, a pest caused by the larvae of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly.

In Baja California Sur, the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) and the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) launched training programs for veterinary and animal science students. These programs focus on surveillance and early detection to maintain the region’s status as free of the infestation.

In Tamaulipas, the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) has established an epidemiological containment and rapid response plan. Led by Rector Dámaso Anaya Alvarado, the initiative involves collaboration with state and municipal authorities, SENASICA, SADER, and local livestock associations. The plan includes university-led brigades to train small and medium-sized producers in wound disinfection and early identification. Furthermore, the UAT utilizes a network of specialized traps for epidemiological monitoring, conducting laboratory taxonomic classification to issue early warnings and providing field veterinary medical attention to animals suffering from myiasis.

Expanding the scope to a transboundary level, Mexico and several Central American nations—including Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama—have launched a coordinated regional strategy to eradicate the pest. In collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), these nations established the Regional Technical Group of the Sanitary Intelligence Center for this pest (CRIS-GBG). This group aims to optimize information analysis and decision-making through a shared sanitary intelligence framework to protect the continent’s livestock heritage.
