Several Mexican airports, including major hubs like Mexico City International Airport (AICM), have sought to increase flight slots to accommodate rising industry demand. At AICM, officials noted that further capacity increases depend on infrastructure studies, safety procedures, and the successful management of currently authorized slots.

In response to these capacity needs, Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), via the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), issued new guidelines for assigning takeoff and landing slots at aerodromes with Level 2 saturation potential. Effective September 5, 2026, these regulations require air carriers and airport administrators to coordinate schedule adjustments to mitigate congestion.
