Catholic religious leaders in Mexico have used recent homilies to address escalating social issues, including violence, crime, and corruption.

In Puebla, Auxiliary Bishop Francisco Javier Martínez Castillo addressed the faithful regarding a global climate of “war, crime, violence, and social division,” calling for a commitment to social transformation through love and justice.

Following this, Ramón Castro Castro, Bishop of Cuernavaca and president of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, expressed concern over rising homicide rates and the breakdown of the family unit. He specifically cited a machete attack at a school in Torreón, Coahuila, as evidence of growing violence in educational settings. Castro Castro defended the Church’s involvement in socio-political matters, stating that limiting its voice would be a “betrayal of the Gospel,” and reaffirmed the institution’s support for crime victims and searching collectives.
