Mexico is advancing legislative, regulatory, and commercial initiatives to strengthen the mezcal industry. In Puebla, the State Congress is driving reforms to the NOM-070-SCFI-2016 standard to protect quality and the regional value chain. Experts warn that market pressure could lead to environmental strain on land and water resources, as well as risks to genetic diversity if traditional maturation cycles are bypassed. Sustainable practices, including climate change adaptation and supply chain traceability, are being emphasized to ensure economic value reaches local communities.

In Morelos, the Mezcal Denomination of Origin covers 23 municipalities. Ancestral mezcal from Palpan de Baranda recently received national recognition during President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning conference. Complementing these steps, the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) in Morelos has launched a project incorporating local artisanal mezcal into restaurant menus to move the spirit into a structured commercial network.
