Sources: 51. Developments: 2. Political tensions in Mexico escalated following remarks by former President Felipe Calderón, who accused the ruling Morena party of attempting to establish a ‘perfect dictatorship’ by dismantling institutional checks and balances. Calderón specifically criticized judicial reforms and noted high levels of political violence. Following these comments, protesters—identified as former employees of the defunct state-owned utility Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC)—targeted a bronze statue of Calderón at the Los Pinos Cultural Center. The demonstrators decapitated the sculpture and removed its plaque to protest the 2009 extinction of the utility. President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the vandalism and the unauthorized entry into the complex, though she acknowledged the historical discontent regarding LyFC. While the Mexican Electricians Union (SME) distanced itself from the act, claiming the perpetrators were outsiders, legal action has been initiated. Lawyer Roberto Gil Zuarth filed a criminal complaint with the Fiscalía General de la República to investigate those responsible and determine if officials failed to protect the national monument. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Felipe Calderón statue decapitated at Los Pinos during protest A statue of former Mexican President Felipe Calderón was decapitated at Los Pinos during a protest by former utility workers, prompting criminal complaints and warnings of political intolerance. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/felipe-caldern-statue-decapitated-at-los-pinos-during-protest ### 2026-09-30: Felipe Calderón warns of 'perfect dictatorship' as protesters vandalize his statue Former President Felipe Calderón accused Morena of creating a 'perfect dictatorship' while protesters decapitated his statue at Los Pinos in response to the 2009 dissolution of Luz y Fuerza del Centro. 48 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/felipe-caldern-warns-of-perfect-dictatorship-in-mexico --- Cite as: Mexican political tension and Los Pinos vandalism.
