Ángela Karime Venegas Hernández, a student from CETis 78 in Altamira, Tamaulipas, has developed an experimental acoustic fire extinguisher named ‘Vortex Tech’. The device utilizes low-frequency sound waves, specifically a 30 hertz frequency, to create vortex rings that displace the oxygen required for combustion.

The portable prototype operates using a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier, and a speaker. Inspired by research into sonic cannons from agencies such as DARPA, the invention is designed to be an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods as it requires no water, foam, or chemical substances.

Following a year of research and multiple iterations, Venegas Hernández presented the device at the 2026 International Science and Invention Fair (ISIF) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Competing against approximately 110 projects from 25 countries, the project won a gold medal in the technology category and the IYSA Semi Grand Award, which grants the inventor the right to participate in future international scientific forums, such as the I2ASPO 2026 online event. The project was developed under the guidance of instructor Arturo Hernández Muñoz.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has recognized the achievement, noting that the Secretariat of Science and Technology has contacted the student to learn more about the invention. The President cited Venegas Hernández as an example of the “high-level talent emerging from Mexican educational institutions.” While the device remains in the experimental stage and is not yet ready for commercialization, it demonstrates potential for clean, residue-free fire suppression.
