In early July 2026 the Secretaría de Cultura and the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia opened the temporary exhibition “El juego de pelota en Tenochtitlan” at Mexico City’s Museo del Templo Mayor. The show, with more than 100 archaeological objects including two 3,000‑year‑old rubber balls, runs through September and is linked to the cultural programme surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That same weekend free‑admission cultural activities were offered in the tourist hubs of Cancún and Mérida—concerts, theatre, dance workshops, videomapping and family‑friendly events at venues such as Teatro de la Ciudad and Centro Cultural Mérida Olimpo. Parallel free‑access events were staged in Argentina’s Mendoza province, featuring visual‑arts exhibitions and a large “Peña de la Independencia” folk celebration. On 15 July Mexico and France launched La Gran Fiesta Franco‑Mexicana, a 200‑year diplomatic anniversary program that will run from 1 September to 30 November 2026 in 21 Mexican cities. The initiative adds exhibitions, concerts, film cycles, festivals and gastronomy events—including a French photography showcase, a culinary festival at Los Pinos and a heritage exchange of codices—to provide free or low‑cost cultural experiences during the World Cup year. On 14 July Mexico’s Lotería Nacional unveiled a commemorative lottery ticket to mark the bicentennial of diplomatic relations with France. Presented by Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco, French Ambassador Delphine Borione and Lotería director Olivia Salomón, the ticket will be part of Major Draw No. 4023 on 4 August 2026, offering a top prize of 21 million pesos and a total prize pool of 66 million pesos. A new free exhibition, Tlachtli, curated by photographer Santiago Arau Pontones, is on display at the National Museum of Anthropology and had attracted 17,405 visitors by late July. It will remain open until 23 August.
