Mexico is facing calls to diversify its economy and trade dependencies to mitigate risks associated with its current trade frameworks. Analysts, including Gabriel Guerra Castellanos, have suggested that the nation must reinvent economic policy to address declining growth and reduce reliance on the United States, which has been characterized as an “unreliable partner.” Castellanos noted that recent tensions involving Canada are a logical consequence of aggressive U.S. policies toward its partners.

Within the agricultural sector, leaders have expressed concerns that existing trade rules favor large corporations over small-scale farmers and indigenous communities. José Socorro Jacobo Femat of the Central de Organizaciones Campesinas y Populares (COCyP) argued that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) favors free investment over the legal recognition and competitive conditions required for ejidos and indigenous communities.

A critical challenge remains the widening gap in maize production. Projections from the Grupo Consultor de Mercados Agrícolas (GCMA) suggest a significant decline in self-sufficiency; by the end of 2026, Mexico is projected to produce only 23.5 million tons of maize against a consumption requirement of 48.2 million tons.

In response to these vulnerabilities, the Mexican government is pursuing food sovereignty through technological and biological initiatives. To mark World Food Day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) delivered 35 varieties of native maize seeds, preserved by CIMMYT, to producers in Guerrero. Furthermore, the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti) is promoting developments in biofertilizers, intelligent irrigation, and food conservation to bridge the gap between scientific research and field productivity.
