Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) has provided guidance regarding tax deductions for educational expenses and the mechanics of tax refunds.

Authorities clarified that tuition at private institutions with official validity is deductible, with specific annual limits based on educational level: 14,200 pesos for preschool, 12,900 for primary, 19,900 for secondary, 17,100 for technical professional studies, and 24,500 for high school. While certain costs like mandatory school transportation may be deductible under specific conditions, other back-to-school expenses—such as enrollment fees, school supplies, uniforms, and recreational activities—are not eligible.

Additionally, the SAT noted that tax refunds may not be issued directly if a surplus exists. Instead, authorities may automatically compensate the refund amount against outstanding debts owed to the tax office or other linked public organisms, such as applying income tax refunds to settle deferred VAT payments.
