Mexico experienced an upward trend in inflation during August 2026, breaking a four-month period of deceleration. National annual inflation rose to 3.26%, which represents a decrease from the 3.57% recorded in August 2025. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that the year-to-date accumulated inflation for 2026 stands at 3.3%.

The monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.20% compared to July. This uptick was primarily driven by food prices, with significant increases recorded for onions (32.70%), serrano chili (19.61%), lemon (11.17%), and eggs (8.91%). In Saltillo, Coahuila, local inflation reached 0.34% in the first half of August, driven by school year costs and transport. Sectoral analysis shows education saw a 6.0% increase, while food, beverages, and tobacco rose by 4.7%. Conversely, the energy and agricultural sectors experienced a 1.5% decrease, and potatoes saw a price drop of 10.7%.

Despite the rise in general inflation, core inflation—excluding volatile energy and fresh food items—showed a continued decline, falling to 3.88% from 3.95% in July. This remains within the Bank of Mexico’s target range of 3% plus or minus one percentage point.

Economic projections from the IMEF Monthly Survey of Economic Expectations slightly increased the 2026 real GDP growth estimate to 1.3% from 1.2%. The inflation estimate for 2026 remains at 4.0%, with the monetary policy rate expected to end the year at 6.50%. The IMEF also projects a 2026 exchange rate of approximately 17.60 pesos.
