# Mexico-Brazil and PAHO hospital resilience and safety

In late July 2026, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) hosted a delegation from Brazil’s Ministry of Health and specialists from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for a technical exchange. From July 27 to 29, the parties conducted workshops and field visits to a Hospital General de Zona under construction in Yecapixtla, Morelos, and an operating facility in the State of Mexico. Discussions focused on integrating safety, sustainability, accessibility, and climate-risk preparedness into hospital design and operations, specifically regarding water, energy, communications, staffing, and supply chains.

The collaboration also addressed preparedness for the 2027 women’s football tournament in Brazil, covering risk assessment, epidemiological surveillance, and mental-health support. While no new joint investments were announced, the exchange emphasized maintaining essential services during natural disasters and emergencies.

Expanding on these efforts to improve service quality, IMSS officials in Puebla conducted inspections of family medicine clinics and Hospital General de Zona No. 15 to monitor medication supplies, equipment maintenance, and staffing. Additionally, IMSS and PAHO have initiated a partnership to strengthen Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programs. Following an August 15 evaluation of several medical units and the “Dr. Silvestre Frenk Freund” Pediatric Hospital, the initiative aims to combat healthcare-associated infections and the rise of multidrug-resistant microorganisms to enhance patient safety.
