Michelle Landry, the Member of Parliament for Capricornia in central Queensland, announced her intention to retire at the 2028 federal election. Having held the seat since 2013, Landry cited the extensive travel requirements of her large electorate and a desire to spend more time with family as her primary reasons for stepping down.

Following this announcement, Nationals leader Matt Canavan indicated a willingness to move from the Senate to the House of Representatives to contest the seat. Canavan stated he would do “whatever it takes” to support the party, as the Nationals face potential electoral challenges from Labor and One Nation in the region.
