Geologists from the Geological Survey of India have achieved a breakthrough by directly dating 3.5-billion-year-old evidence of microbial life in the Singhbhum Craton of eastern India.

By analyzing carbonaceous chert from the Bhitardari outcrop, researchers successfully linked organic biosignatures directly to radioactive zircon crystals. This method, which utilizes zircons deposited alongside volcanic ash, allows for precise radiometric dating. This approach overcomes previous limitations where scientists had to rely on indirect dating by analyzing surrounding rock layers.

Using Raman spectroscopy and carbon isotope analysis, the team confirmed that the carbonaceous layers experienced temperatures between 324 and 369 degrees Celsius. The findings suggest that complex metabolic pathways may have existed in ancient marine environments rich in iron and silica nearly 3.5 billion years ago.
