On October 13, two powerful earthquakes struck along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a magnitude 6.7 earthquake at 05:44 UTC, followed roughly six hours later by a magnitude 6.8 tremor at 12:23 UTC.

Geophysicist Stefan Burns described the sequence as a “doublet.” He suggested the events might involve the redistribution of stress between the African, South American, and potentially the North American tectonic plates. Some specialists have raised concerns that these tremors could trigger a seismic “chain reaction” or “knock-on effect” involving interconnected tectonic plates, potentially impacting regions such as Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, or North American fault systems.

While research from the University of California, Berkeley, indicates that major quakes can influence faults thousands of kilometers away, the USGS maintains that earthquakes cannot be predicted with precision or long-term advance notice. As the epicenters were located far from populated areas, no casualties or material damages have been reported.
