The Balearic Islands continue to face a surge in irregular migration via small boats, primarily from North Africa. Regional authorities have reported significant influxes, including recent operations near Mallorca and Cabrera where the Guardia Civil and Salvamento Marítimo intercepted 66 migrants across three separate vessels.

In response to the rising number of arrivals, particularly unaccompanied minors, the President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, announced plans to expand provisional facilities at the former Son Tous barracks in Mallorca. Prohens noted that the islands are currently caring for 880 unaccompanied minors and criticized the central Spanish government for failing to adequately address the crisis, leaving regional resources under significant humanitarian and economic strain.

Recent pressure on local resources has intensified. The Balearic Government is providing guardianship to 916 foreign minors. In Ibiza, the Consell reports that unaccompanied foreign minors now constitute 60% of all minors under their protection, a trend that has overwhelmed existing resources.

Minister of Transport Óscar Puente has acknowledged a notable rise in small boat arrivals compared to the summer of 2025, prompting promises to increase the operational capacity of Salvamento Marítimo to manage humanitarian emergencies. Recent arrivals include a group of 26 migrants—20 men and six women—who landed at a crowded beach in Cala Santanyí, Mallorca, as part of a larger wave across Mallorca, Cabrera, and Formentera.

Due to the high number of minors exceeding the established capacity of 434 places, the Balearic Government has authorized a legal appeal to the Supreme Court against the royal decree regulating the capacity of minor protection centers.
