Following his appointment as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, Mike Babcock faced significant criticism from team legend Mark Messier. Messier expressed he was “absolutely shocked” and “horrified” by the hiring, citing Babcock’s history of alleged misconduct and controversial player treatment. Messier also raised concerns regarding the hiring process, specifically the involvement of player leaders in the interview stage.

As the season progressed, Babcock prepared to face his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. During this period, former colleague Justin Bourne defended Babcock against past controversies regarding staff cellphones, suggesting his actions were intended to build personal connections rather than being malicious.
