Sources: 8. Developments: 2. AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar is experiencing an international eligibility deadlock caused by FIFA regulations. Although born and raised in Belgium to Serbian parents, Svilar’s participation in a 2021 friendly match for Serbia against Qatar has restricted his ability to switch to the Belgian senior national team. While the Belgian Football Association attempted to resolve the matter by citing previous precedents, these efforts were unsuccessful. The core of the dispute rests on FIFA rules stating a player can only change nationality if their appearances for the first nation occurred before the age of 21. Because Svilar debuted for Serbia five days after his 22nd birthday, he is ineligible to represent Belgium. As of October 2026, the 27-year-old remains in a state of professional limbo. Despite being named Serie A’s best goalkeeper for two consecutive seasons, he is currently without a national team. The Serbian national team no longer considers him an option following his decision to switch, and his prospects for representing Belgium remain blocked while his legal team continues to pursue a solution. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-04: Mile Svilar remains ineligible for international football AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar is unable to play for Belgium or Serbia due to FIFA rules after debuting for Serbia at age 22, leaving the two-time Serie A best goalkeeper without a national team. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mile-svilar-faces-international-deadlock-due-to-fifa-rules ### 2026-09-25: Mile Svilar faces international eligibility deadlock AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar is stuck in an international eligibility deadlock, unable to play for Belgium due to FIFA rules following a single friendly appearance for Serbia in 2021. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mile-svilar-faces-international-eligibility-deadlock --- Cite as: Mile Svilar international eligibility dispute.
