Milk prices in Maharashtra and Mumbai have seen upward adjustments driven by rising operational and production costs.

In early August, the Milk Producers and Processors Welfare Association announced a price increase of Rs 2 per litre for cow and buffalo milk in Maharashtra, effective August 11. This hike was attributed to rising diesel prices, a 30 per cent increase in packaging costs, and higher procurement prices. At the time, the Indian government clarified that no Minimum Support Price for milk was being proposed.

By late August, the Bombay Milk Producers Association (BMPA) announced a significant wholesale price hike for the Mumbai region. Effective September 1, 2026, wholesale milk prices are set to rise by ₹9 per litre, increasing from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre. This adjustment is scheduled to remain in effect through February 28, 2027.

Producers attributed the Mumbai hike to escalating operational costs, specifically noting that essential cattle feed and fodder prices have risen, with some grain components increasing by up to 25 per cent. The price adjustment is expected to impact household budgets ahead of the festive season, as retail vendors, local dairies, and eateries are anticipated to pass these costs on to consumers. This may lead to secondary price increases for dairy-based products such as curd, paneer, and sweets.
