A series of fatal mining accidents occurred in the municipality of Santa Bárbara, Chihuahua, during September 2026.

On September 10, a worker identified as Juan Andrés Ramírez Martínez, known as ‘El Rojo’, died after falling into a mine shaft at the Los Magueyes mine while performing artisanal mining activities. 

Four additional deaths were reported on September 13 following a collapse at the ‘La Flauta’ mine shaft in the Clarines sector. The victims were identified as José Ángel Vargas Becerril, Jesús Emanuel Burciaga Bonilla, Irving Pargas Güereca, and José Dionicio García Ponce. 

While the National Seismological Service reported a 3.4 magnitude earthquake near the area around the time of the second incident, authorities have not confirmed a direct causal link between the seismic activity and the mine collapse. The consecutive events have highlighted the risks faced by ‘gambusinos’ (informal miners) in the region.
