Republican Senate candidate Michele Tafoya has centered her campaign against Democratic Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan on issues of government accountability and fraud in Minnesota.

Initially, Tafoya highlighted the ‘Feeding Our Future’ scandal, a COVID-19 pandemic meal program involving at least $250 million in fraudulent activity. Tafoya alleged that while organizer Aimee Bock received a prison sentence, there has been a lack of accountability within the administration of Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, claiming whistleblowers were silenced.

Tafoya subsequently expanded her criticism to include alleged welfare fraud in Hennepin County, specifically regarding funds intended for businesses affected by ICE raids. During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, she argued the state has failed to hold individuals accountable for these discrepancies.

As the political contest remains a toss-up, recent polling shows the race tightening. While an earlier Real Clear Politics poll indicated Flanagan held a 1.8-point lead, a new InsiderAdvantage survey of 1,200 likely voters shows a statistical tie, with Flanagan at 46% and Tafoya at 45%.

In a recent development, the Duluth News Tribune endorsed Tafoya for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tina Smith. The newspaper characterized Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter, as an ‘independent-minded’ candidate possessing the communication skills and ability to process information quickly necessary for leadership. Tafoya suggested her experience managing high-intensity environments in professional football is comparable to the demands of Washington, D.C.
