German utility companies and consumer protection agencies have issued warnings regarding misleading mass mailings from competitive smart meter operators.

Initially, providers such as Stadtwerke Gunzenhausen and Stadtwerke Roth reported that companies like DMG Deutsche Messwesen GmbH and metrify smart metering GmbH were sending letters that created a “false impression that legal requirements mandate the installation of smart meters.” These utilities clarified they have no contractual relationship with these entities and that the letters are private advertisements rather than official notices.

As the situation progressed, reports expanded to include regions such as Nuremberg and Bayreuth. Local providers, including N-ERGIE Netz GmbH and Stadtwerke Bayreuth, warned that these external operators use “official-sounding language to suggest urgency or imply that installation is already planned.”

Consumer protection agencies have advised residents that they are under no obligation to sign contracts with these third parties. They noted that while local municipal utilities are typically responsible for mandated installations at no cost, competitive providers may not be subject to the same price caps, potentially leading to higher ongoing costs for consumers.
