The Missouri State Board of Education has approved a new A-F grading framework for public schools, charter schools, and districts. Following an executive order from Governor Mike Kehoe, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) will implement a 100-point scale to represent student performance. 

Under this system, grades are determined by academic achievement and growth in literacy, mathematics, and science for elementary and middle schools, while high school evaluations will include graduation rates and Success-Ready Graduate measures. DESE Deputy Commissioner Lisa Sireno stated the framework is intended to be ‘user-friendly for parents.’ While the grades aim to help schools identify challenges, they will not affect school accreditation or funding. However, schools failing to test at least 95% of students on required assessments will face a one-letter grade reduction.

To ensure accuracy, the state will pilot the framework using 2024-25 school data before public release. During the approval process, school leaders raised concerns about the influence of poverty on scores, though officials maintained that growth measures are designed to credit academic improvement regardless of economic background. In response to these state-level changes, Joplin Schools has launched a local ‘Complete Report Card’ initiative to supplement academic data with metrics such as school safety, special education, arts, athletics, and parent satisfaction.
