MIT researchers have introduced two distinct advancements in 3D-printing technology focused on creating interactive and adaptive objects.

Initially, researchers developed ShiftLens, a multimaterial 3D-printing system that produces objects capable of changing visual appearance without electronics. By using stacked optical layers consisting of lenticular lenses and a patterned backplane, the system allows users to change an object’s visual state through physical movement, such as pressing or sliding. Subsequently, engineers developed “bifur-circuits,” a system of 3D-printed modular components using mechanical metamaterials. These components utilize mechanical bifurcation to allow objects to snap into various stable configurations. Unlike previous methods, this technology maintains continuous, wire-free electrical conductivity during reconfiguration, enabling objects to sense their own shape and communicate with electronic displays. Potential uses range from adaptive soft-robotics and reconfigurable grippers to assistive furniture.
