Developments in residential architecture and housing solutions have focused on modularity and space optimization. In Spain, modular housing designs have utilized prefabricated wooden skeletons and sustainable materials like cork and clay to facilitate self-construction.

In other contexts, the use of expandable modular units imported from China has been noted for its cost implications, where low initial prices can be offset by high logistics and transport expenses. Additionally, urban residential design in Poland has emphasized maximizing existing footprints through structural renovations and built-in furniture to improve functionality for families.
