The Moldovan government approved the establishment of a Moldo-Turkish technical college in Comrat, Gagauzia, named after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The institution is designed to offer engineering and IT programs taught in Romanian to address regional shortages of qualified technicians.

However, the project has encountered delays due to political and administrative disputes between the central government in Chișinău and local authorities in Gagauzia. While the Moldovan Ministry of Education and Research emphasized the need to “consolidate the linguistic space of the Republic of Moldova” by using Romanian as the language of instruction, local authorities have reportedly insisted on Russian.

Although the $4 million facility is largely complete, these disagreements regarding administration and language, alongside pending authorizations and recruitment processes, may delay the college’s opening from its planned 2026 start to September 2027.
