A massive wildfire occurred on October 8, 2026, in Mongolia’s Numrug Nature Reserve, destroying approximately 530,000 hectares—roughly 80 percent of the protected area.

Japanese telecommunications company KDDI issued a formal apology, stating the fire originated from a vehicle used by employees of its local subsidiary, Mobicom. The company explained that the fire began when smoke emerged from beneath a vehicle while the group was stopped to remove dry grass. KDDI noted that the employees, including CEO Yasuhiro Ochi, were in the reserve under the supervision of local authorities to attend a network launch ceremony.

While some media reports suggested the group entered the area for illegal hunting or fishing, KDDI denied these allegations. The Mongolian government is investigating the cause and considering claims for compensation regarding environmental damage and firefighting costs. The incident has also drawn public commentary from former sumo grand champion Asashoryu, who expressed concerns regarding media coverage.

In response to the disaster, the Japanese government has announced it will dispatch experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to assist with forest protection. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated that Japan intends to provide a support package including necessary equipment and cooperation in fire recovery, environmental restoration, and human resource development. The Japanese government will coordinate closely with Mongolian authorities based on reports from the dispatched experts.
