A consortium led by Galp Energia, alongside Namibia’s state oil company NAMCOR and Custos, has identified a major offshore oil discovery in the Orange Basin’s PEL83 license. Initial drilling at the Mopane-1X and Mopane-2X wells encountered high-quality light oil in multiple sand layers, with technical data indicating high porosity, strong reservoir pressure, and low CO₂ content.

Following subsequent exploration through wells Mopane-3X and Mopane-3S, the estimated in-place resources have been valued at approximately $700 billion, with reserves estimated at 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The project is currently transitioning from the discovery phase to resource assessment to evaluate commercial viability.
