Developments: 2. Morocco is observing its first Unity Day on October 31, 2026, a national holiday established by King Mohammed VI. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, issued on October 31, 2025, which recognized the Moroccan autonomy proposal regarding the Sahara issue. In anticipation of the holiday, university presidents from Ibn Zohr University and Mohammed I University in Oujda issued formal messages of congratulations to the King, expressing loyalty and solidarity. As celebrations commence, festivities are occurring across the kingdom, including in the southern provinces of Laâyoune and Dakhla, featuring street decorations, public illuminations, and community events. In Chtouka Ait Baha, local ceremonies have included official flag-raising and the awarding of royal medals to citizens. International recognition of the holiday extends to the Moroccan diaspora, with the Moroccan Consulate General in Paris hosting a reception to reaffirm support for the kingdom’s territorial integrity. The holiday marks a symbolic transition in the diplomatic process, moving toward a framework centered on Moroccan sovereignty rather than previous referendum-based approaches. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-30: Morocco celebrates first Unity Day marking territorial sovereignty Morocco marks its first Unity Day, a national holiday established by King Mohammed VI following UN Resolution 2797 to celebrate territorial integrity and the autonomy plan for the Sahara. 14 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/morocco-commemorates-first-unity-day ### 2026-10-29: Moroccan university presidents congratulate King Mohammed VI on Unity Day Presidents of Ibn Zohr and Mohammed I universities in Morocco have sent congratulatory messages to King Mohammed VI marking the first anniversary of Unity Day. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/moroccan-university-presidents-congratulate-king-mohammed-vi-on-unity-day --- Cite as: Morocco Unity Day commemoration.
