Mozambique has seen a significant increase in electricity access, rising from 9.8 million people in 2019 to approximately 22.7 million people, or 66.9% of the population, as of late August 2026. All 11 provincial capitals and 154 district headquarters are currently electrified.

To support the national goal of universal energy access by 2030, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has launched the ‘Energia para Todos’ (Energy for All) program. This initiative utilizes national grid expansion, mini-grids, and solar systems to reach rural and peri-urban areas, with a specific target of establishing 420,000 new connections by the end of 2026.

To address infrastructure vulnerabilities, EDM Chairman Joaquim Henrique Ou-chim announced the creation of a rapid response unit designed to mitigate damage caused by natural disasters during the rainy season.
