Mozambique is undergoing a significant transition in its national logistics system, shifting cargo transport from roads to maritime routes. This movement is supported by an increase in the operational maritime fleet, which has grown from two vessels to six ships in regular operation. This shift has reportedly removed the equivalent of approximately 14,000 trucks from the country’s highways since April 2025.

To support this infrastructure and the regional liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) launched the Afungi Shuttle. This coastal feeder service connects the Afungi industrial zone with regional port hubs in Nacala and Maputo. The service is designed to transport heavy machinery, construction materials, and industrial equipment, integrating these routes into major global trade networks serving Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.
