Latvian rally driver Mārtiņš Sesks expanded his competitive scope in late August 2026 by making his rally-raid debut at Baja Poland. Competing in the T3-class ‘Viking Challenger’, Sesks noted the discipline requires different strategies than traditional rallying, specifically regarding navigation via roadbook and long-duration energy management.

Following changes to the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar, the season finale shifted to Rally Italia Sardegna in Alghero, replacing a previously scheduled event in Saudi Arabia. Sesks and co-driver Renārs Francs expressed mixed emotions about the change; Sesks noted the Saudi Arabian rally had been a significant career milestone where he had led the race before technical and tire issues hindered his result. He emphasized the need to accept the situation and focus on the Sardinia finale, which features 17 special stages over 307.02 kilometers of gravel.

During the first day of the Sardinia Rally, the 13th and final round of the 2026 WRC, Sesks and Francs faced challenges with the M-Sport Ford team, including a tire puncture in the fourth stage that caused a loss of over two minutes. Despite this setback, Sesks climbed to 10th place by the end of the day, recording two seventh-place finishes in the final stages. This event serves as the final appearance for the current Rally1 generation of cars before new technical regulations are introduced in 2027.
