Researchers are investigating new therapeutic approaches for multiple sclerosis that focus on myelin repair and the reversal of neurological damage rather than solely managing inflammation.

At the University of Colorado, scientists developed an experimental molecule, LL-341070, which acts as a thyroid hormone mimetic. In preclinical models, this compound boosted oligodendrocyte generation and accelerated the repair of myelin sheaths, resulting in functional improvements in vision-related brain activity.

Concurrently, research at UVA Health has focused on Kamuvudine K-9, a derivative of existing HIV medications. In mouse models, K-9 demonstrated the ability to reverse paralysis and vision loss by preserving nerve fibers and halting the rise of neurofilament light chain, a biomarker of nerve damage. This work is supported by epidemiological data involving over 3 million people, which suggests that certain HIV drugs are associated with a 41% reduction in the risk of developing multiple sclerosis and lower annual relapse rates.
